The County is a rich tapestry of individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, nationalities and faiths. One-fourth of our population is foreign-born, contributing to the unique vibrancy that sets our County apart. We provide essential community programs, including public and mental health services, a court and juvenile justice system, the recording of property and the issuance of licenses for marriage, drivers and vehicle plates. These services are provided to the citizens by more than 6,500 employees working in 100 different departments and elected offices.
The Department of Financial Services supervises and regulates the activities of approximately 1,500 banking and other financial institutions with assets totaling more than $2.6 trillion and more than 1,400 insurance companies with assets of more than $4.7 trillion. They include more than 130 life insurance companies, 1,300 property/casualty insurance companies, about 100 health insurers and managed care organizations, and 300,000 individual insurance licensees, 122 state-chartered banks, 80 foreign branches, 10 foreign agencies, 14 credit unions, 13 credit rating agencies, nearly 400 licensed financial services companies, and more than 9,600 mortgage loan originators and servicers.

Western Connecticut Council of Governments (WCCOG) is a newly created regional planning organization as of January 1, 2015, which represents eighteen cities and towns in southwestern and western Connecticut. WCCOG was formed out of the merger of the South West Regional Planning Agency (SWRPA) and the Housatonic Valley Council of Elected Officials (HVCEO).
The Office of Compliance (OOC) is an independent, non-partisan agency established to administer and enforce the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) of 1995. OOC administers and ensures the integrity of the dispute resolution system established to resolve disputes that arise under the CAA; carries out an education and training program for Congressional Members, employing offices, and Congressional employees to assist them in understanding their rights and responsibilities under the CAA; and advises Congress on needed changes and amendments to the CAA. The General Counsel of the OOC has independent investigatory and enforcement authority for certain violations of the CAA.
