Sandy Hook Promise

Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. We are led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012 that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and 6 educators. Sandy Hook Promise is focused on preventing gun violence (and all violence) BEFORE it happens by educating and mobilizing parents, schools and communities on mental health and wellness programs that identify, intervene and help at-risk individuals. SHP is a moderate, above-the-politics organization that supports sensible non-policy and policy solutions that protect children and prevent gun violence. Our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation.

Georgia Department of Education

The Georgia Department of Education sets policy for all public schools in the state and implements new laws passed by the Georgia General Assembly. The Department trains teachers and principals, oversees federal education programs, tracks how schools are performing and manages the state`s K-12 budget. The Department also works directly with districts in an advisory capacity on school safety, charter schools and homeless students, among other areas. There are nearly 200 school systems in Georgia, employing 110,000 teachers. Those systems include Department of Juvenile Justice programs, state chartered schools and state schools for the blind and deaf. In the 2012-13 school year, there were 1.7 million public school students in Georgia attending 2,275 schools. We are making education work for all Georgians!
