Greensboro, NC-based Guilford County Schools has Appointed Shirley D. Morrison as Chief Human Resources Officer

 

About the Company

Guilford County Schools is the third largest school district in North Carolina serving more than 72,000 students. The second largest employer in a 12-county area, GCS` more than 10,000 full- and part-time employees enthusiastically share the district`s mission: to graduate responsible citizens prepared to succeed in higher education or the career of their choice. The district`s 124 schools located in both urban and rural areas, include elementary schools serving grades K through 5, and in some instances, pre-K through 5. To the relief of working parents, after-school care is offered at many elementary schools throughout the county. The district also has middle schools (grades 6-8), high schools (grades 9-12), two special education schools (Gateway and McIver Education Centers), two SCALE sites, which provide an alternative to long-term suspensions, and Twilight School, which offers high school students a flexible schedule to complete graduation requirements. GCS offers parents and students a wide range of educational choices that are not usually found in public school systems, including 53 magnet and choice programs.

 

About the Person

Shirley Morrison is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Guilford County Schools. Morrison oversees the Human Resources department, which is responsible for recruiting, developing and maintaining a high-quality workforce for the district.   Since 1981, Morrison has served in many positions within the district, including assistant principal at Smith High, principal at Lindley Elementary and Frazier Elementary and executive director of elementary schools. She also served as executive director of human resources and interim chief human resources officer.   She has been recognized as an outstanding educator and administrator of the year numerous times. Prior to coming to GCS, she worked for Greensboro City Schools, Reidsville City Schools and Sun Oil Company in Greensboro. In 2010, Morrison was appointed to a commission studying the retirement of state and local government employees. Members of the commission include government employees and retirees, private sector leaders, educators and human resources experts.   Morrison holds a bachelor`s degree in business education and master`s degrees in counseling and school administration from North Carolina A&T State University. She holds a doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
