The Medford School District is a premier district that encompasses 361 square miles in the heart of Southern Oregon`s beautiful Rogue River Valley. We serve 13,400 students in 14 elementary schools, two middle schools, three high schools and four charter schools.

 

About the Person

Sharilyn Cano is the Director of Human Resources at Medford School District 549C, effective October 20, 2015.   Mrs. Cano has 23 years` human-resources experience, mostly in education. Since 2003, she has served as the human resources director for the Southern Oregon Child & Family Council, which operates Head Start programs in this region. In that job she has managed contract implementation and bargaining with the Council`s unionized employees. She also manages all HR staff and services for the agency, is a pension fund trustee, and designed and administers the agency`s self-insured medical plan.   Mrs. Cano also served for four years as a labor relations representative for the Utah School Employees Association in Murray, Utah. The association represents classified employees. In addition, she worked for seven years as an administrative assistant in the personnel office of the Granite School District in Salt Lake City. In the private sector, she was the personnel training administrator for Lithia Motors in Medford for seven months before joining Southern Oregon Head Start.   Mrs. Cano holds a master`s degree in management from Southern Oregon University and a bachelor`s degree from Westminster College in Salt Lake City. She holds graduate certificates in non-profit management from SOU and in labor relations management from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She also is a graduate of the management fellows program at the UCLA Anderson School of Business in Los Angeles.   In the community, Mrs. Cano is the board president of Maslow Project, which helps homeless youth, and is board secretary for the Addictions Recovery Center. She also is a campaign cabinet member of United Way of Jackson County. Mrs. Cano and her family are the founders of Jessica`s Closet, a boutique store-like school clothing outlet inside Maslow Project. In November 2013, she was invited to speak at a series of media events, congressional briefings and the White House about the impact on the local community from the automatic spending cuts known as sequestration.   Mrs. Cano is married to Richard Cano, the morning announcer on 102.7 FM, The Drive, in Medford. They have six children and seven grandchildren.
