Most patients who are prescribed blockbuster therapies today don`t respond to the treatment, costing the health care industry billions in wasted drugs while patients continue to suffer. Scipher`s platform identifies which drug will work based on the patient`s fundamental disease biology, and not based on symptoms, disease classification, or medical bias. A simple test predicts which drug he/she will respond to, ensuring that most optimal treatment is prescribed from day one. The molecular data generated by our tests is then used to fuel novel target discovery to address a clear unmet medical need in patients who do not respond to any existing therapy.
We are a biotechnology company creating a new class of targeted gene therapies for debilitating and life-threatening genetic disorders in both central nervous system (CNS) and non-CNS indications. Current gene therapy approaches have shown dramatic efficacy in several rare diseases but are hindered by imprecise targeting. The inability to selectively transduce specific cells and tissues effectively drives administration of higher doses and resulting safety liabilities. We are addressing these concerns with our proprietary adeno-associated virus (AAV) engineering platform that generates capsids optimized to target specific tissues and cells in the disease organ while limiting transduction of tissues and cells not relevant to the target disease. Preterm birth is defined as any birth before 37 weeks gestation and is a leading cause of illness and death in newborns. The 2020 March of Dimes Report Card shows that of nearly 4 million babies born annually in the U.S., more than one in ten is born prematurely. Prematurity is associated with a significantly increased risk of major long-term medical complications, including learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, chronic respiratory illness, intellectual disability, seizures, vision and hearing loss, and can generate significant cost throughout the lives of affected children. The annual U.S. health care costs to manage complications of prematurity were estimated at $31.5B for 2015.
