Forrest General consists of 512-inpatient beds with a 400-bed general medical/surgical facility; Pine Grove Behavioral Health Services, an 88-bed chemical dependency and psychiatric unit; and Rehab Resource, a 24-bed rehabilitation unit. In addition, the hospital system includes Forrest General`s Home Care and Hospice, LiveWell Center, Wellness Center, Cancer Center, Wound Healing Center, Highland Community Hospital, a 95-bed acute-care facility in Picayune, and Walthall County General Hospital, a lease management agreement in Tylertown. Forrest General also provides all-levels of care for critical access care hospitals in the 19-county service area, including Covington County Hospital, Greene County Hospital, Hancock Medical Center, Jefferson Davis Community Hospital, Perry County General Hospital, Stone County Hospital, Inc. and Walthall County General Hospital. Regency Hospital Company maintains a 33-bed long-term acute care facility, Regency Hospital, within Forrest General Hospital. Patients at Regency require acute-care for a longer period of time than standard hospital patients.
Indian River Medical Center has a long and interesting history dating back to 1932. It is difficult to imagine a time when Indian River County had no hospital at all, but during the Great Depression the nearest hospital was 70 miles away via two lane roads that were not always paved. Garnett Lunsford Radin, a 29-year-old registered nurse and resourceful woman from Nebraska, purchased a hotel on Old Dixie Highway with $22,000 of her own money and opened the hospital with 21 beds on May 12, 1932. The hospital staff worked under primitive conditions including an artesian well water system and one wood-burning stove providing the building's only heat. Meals were carried in from an outdoor kitchen.
