The University of Maine, founded in Orono in 1865, is the state`s land grant, sea grant and space grant university. It is located on Marsh Island in the homeland of the Penobscot Nation. As Maine`s flagship public university, UMaine has a statewide mission of teaching, research and economic development, and community service. Ouachita was established in 1886, and it is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Ouachita offers undergraduate programs of study in the liberal arts. Small classes are the norm rather than the exception and Ouachita`s student to faculty ratio is approximately 13:1.
