Harnett County Schools

Harnett County Schools Staff, Teachers and Parents - The last several days have been challenging to all of us. I hope that you have not been impacted too severely by the storm. Some of us have sustained damage and others did not have any damage. In the midst of all of this, we have shown the character of the staff of Harnett County Schools. Maintenance and Transportation staff were out during the raging storm to assist those in need. Child nutrition staff and Custodial Services staff were on the scene to minimize the loss and damage to our schools. We are indeed fortunate to have them as members of our Harnett County Schools family. As we recover from Hurricane Matthew I want you to know the reasoning behind the decisions that have been made. Safety of everyone is our first priority. Not all of our schools had power until today. There are approximately 25 roads in Harnett County that are impassable. Some of those roads may take months to repair. Power lines are still down and some of our residents do not have power restored yet. Bus routes are being modified based upon the road closures. Students, Staff and their families are cleaning up debris and damage from the storm. All of this has been considered as I make the decision concerning whether we come to school. As we move forward, I know there are questions as to when will we make up these days. At this point I can say that we are looking at all the options available so that we can best meet the needs of our students and staff. As it stands now, we will have an Optional Teacher Workday tomorrow and a 2 hour delay on Monday. The reasoning of the 2 hour delay is so our bus drivers and staff do not have to drive on roads in the dark. Safety of everyone is still our first priority. In the event of unforeseen circumstances and if we have to adjust the dates or times, please know that it would be out of necessity. In the midst of all of this, I had a request from a school to gather school supplies to send to schools in other counties that have had it much worse that we have. What an awesome act as this typifies the heart of Harnett County Schools Staff. I am honored to work in this county and am proud that we have rallied together and are again moving forward.
