About the Person
Michele Murphy is executive vice president, Human Resources and Corporate Communications, for SUPERVALU, a position she was appointed to in March 2013. She oversees all human resources functions, labor relations and corporate communications, serving the needs of the company’s 35,000 employees. Murphy has more than 30 years of experience in a variety of positions dealing with employment law, human resources and labor relations. She joined SUPERVALU in 2006 and has spent the last seven years as SUPERVALU’s senior vice president of corporate human resources and labor relations. Prior to joining SUPERVALU, she worked at international law firm Morgan Lewis for four years and then joined grocery store operator American Stores. Murphy was a member of the in-house legal group of American Stores Company, where she practiced employment law. After the American Stores / Albertsons merger, she held roles of increasing responsibility at Albertsons and from 2002 – 2006, served as vice president, human resources for Albertsons’ Eastern Division, including Acme. A native of Philadelphia, Michele earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from St. Vincent College and attended law school at the University of Pittsburgh, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Murphy has two children and two grandchildren. She is a volunteer general counsel and past Board of Directors member of Network of Executive Women. She was also named one of the Top Women in Grocery by Progressive Grocer magazine in 2010 and 2011.
