Marjorie Powell is NPR's Vice President for Human Resources. She partners with the CEO, leadership team and Board of Directors to set corporate goals for NPR and drive employee programs and initiatives that align with the company's core mission and values. Powell joined NPR in 2014 after serving as the Associate Vice President for Human Resource Services for the University of Maryland in Baltimore. As chief human resource leader for the university and its seven health sciences, law, and health policy schools, she developed the university's first onboarding program which gave new employees a seamless transition into the university's systems and culture. Powell also designed and implemented a compensation philosophy and plan that reduced the university's turnover rates, and successfully launched a work life program that included working mothers' services and employee education programs. Before joining the University of Maryland, Powell spent four years at Georgetown University as the Director of Affirmative Action Programs, overseeing Georgetown's legal compliance and fostering an environment conducive to diversity and inclusion. Prior to her work at Georgetown, Powell was the Director of Equal Opportunity, HR Policy Development and Analysis at Wayne State University. Among her responsibilities there, she directed collective bargaining strategy for 11 collective bargaining agreements. Earlier in her career at Michigan State University, she served in the Office of the President as the Anti-Discrimination Judicial Board Coordinator/Freedom of Information Officer, and, before that, as the Assistant Dean for Special Projects and Diversity for the College of Social Sciences. Powell received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University and her Juris Doctor from the Ohio State University College of Law.
