Over time, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has become a self-sufficient tribal government with an established economic and social outlook. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is active in donating funds for a variety of projects in neighboring areas. Nearby cities and towns receive support from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians in the way of monetary and bottled water donations for cultural, social, and economic projects to benefit the common good of the communities in which they live and work. The reservation which was established in 1891 is home to the Yuhaviatam Clan of the Serrano Indians who are the indigenous people of the San Bernardino highlands, passes, valleys and mountains who share a common language and culture with other clans of the Serrano people. The reservation is named after Santos Manuel, a great tribal leader, and is located in southern California, in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountain region, just north of the city of Highland. It consists of just over 800 acres of mostly mountainous land. Encompassing gaming governmental operations and other enterprises, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is one of the largest employers in the Inland Empire area and employs over 3000 people. The San Manuel Indian Reservation, like other tribal lands in the United States, is a sovereign territory with a tribal nation and its own system of government. Tribal government consists of two governing bodies: a General Council comprised of adult members 21 years and older, and a seven-member Business Committee elected by the General Council. The Business Committee has a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and three at-large Business Committee members elected to two-year terms. As elected officials, the Business Committee is responsible for enforcing by-laws, establishing policies, protecting business interests and preserving the sovereignty of the tribe.
Station Casinos Inc. is a gaming company based in the Las Vegas suburb of Summerlin, Nevada, founded by Frank Fertitta Jr. Station Casinos along with Boyd Gaming, Cannery Casino Resorts, American Casino & Entertainment Properties, and Herbst Gaming, dominate the Locals market in Las Vegas. The company purchased several sites that were gaming-entitled, meaning that major casinos can be built at that location without additional approvals. There are only a limited number of such sites available in the Las Vegas area. On December 4, 2006, Frank Fertitta III, Lorenzo Fertitta, and Colony Capital LLC, operating as Fertitta Colony Partners, made a highly leveraged offer to purchase all existing shares at $82 per share and take the company private. The Fertitta brothers, their sister Delise Sartini, and Blake Sartini, her husband, with a combined investment of $870.1 million, purchased a 25% stake in Fertitta Colony Partners. Colony Capital contributed $2.6 billion for a 75% share. As of November 7, 2007, the company's stock (old symbol STN) was no longer listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
