Since 2001, the Office of Indigent Defense Services (“IDS”) has overseen legal representation for indigent defendants and others entitled to counsel in North Carolina. Created by an act of the N.C. General Assembly, the organization works daily to make real the Constitution`s right to counsel for those charged with crimes or who face significant deprivations to their liberty. IDS trains, qualifies, and sets performance standards for attorneys, as well as determines the most appropriate and cost-effective methods for delivering legal defense services in each of the state`s judicial districts. It is committed to recruiting North Carolina`s most talented attorneys to represent indigent defendants and to providing those attorneys with the resources they need to be effective. IDS works diligently to anticipate and resolve systemic issues that impact defenders and their clients. For two decades, it has distinguished itself nationally as a leader in the development of innovative, high quality, cost-effective, and accountable indigent defense programs. Many states, including Georgia, Texas and Virginia, have looked to IDS`s example and establishing act for guidance in improving their own defense systems. The organization`s programmatic work includes efforts to increase communication and resource-sharing with the private bar; the development of legal training programs, often in partnership with the UNC School of Government; the establishment of a specialized Office of the Juvenile Defender; and the creation of performance guidelines for appointed counsel across a number of practice areas. IDS also works regularly with the Offices of the Capital Defender and Appellate Defender to recruit and evaluate attorneys for their respective rosters, ensure their appointments in a timely and equitable manner, and to support them with expert services. IDS and its staff are committed to the continued delivery of quality legal services to indigent persons throughout North Carolina. The Department of the Secretary of State touches the lives of virtually every Maine resident. From safeguarding the original Maine State Constitution and preserving millions of precious historic documents, to conducting state elections and testing motor vehicle operators, the broad array of Department functions is unusual and interesting. In Maine, the Secretary of State oversees one cohesive Department made up of three distinct bureaus: the Maine State Archives, the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions (CEC), and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). As a Constitutional Officer, the Secretary is elected biennially through joint ballot of the Maine State Legislature, and is charged with carrying out the Department`s diverse responsibilities and unique mission. Because customer service and government efficiency are top priorities, the Department is recognized as a leader in the effort to enhance access to information and services through the use of technology. With more than 20 online services already in place, the Department of the Secretary of State is demonstrating the exciting possibilities for making e-Government services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Through a partnership with the Information Resource of Maine (InforME), new online services are being launched on a regular basis. Importantly, the Department takes its responsibilities in the area of elections and civic education very seriously. The Farm Credit Administration (FCA) is an independent Federal agency that regulates and examines the banks, associations, and related entities of the Farm Credit System (FCS), including the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (Farmer Mac). The FCS is the largest agricultural lender in the United States. It is a nationwide network of lending institutions that are owned by their borrowers. It serves all 50 States and Puerto Rico. The FCS provides credit and other services to agricultural producers and farmer-owned cooperatives. It also makes loans for the following: - Agricultural processing and marketing activities - Rural housing - Certain farm-related businesses - Agricultural and aquatic cooperatives - Rural utilities - Foreign and domestic companies involved in international agricultural trade Our headquarters, as well as a field office, are located in McLean, Virginia.
