Located in Sparta, TN, Highlands Medical Center is a 60-bed acute-care hospital accredited by The Joint Commission. Founded in 1929 by Dr. E.B. Clark, the hospital currently employs more than 230 people at its current modern facility, which was built in 1996. HMC is a part of the Capella-Saint Thomas system of hospitals, a joint venture between Capella Healthcare and Saint Thomas Health, along with sister hospitals River Park Hospital in McMinnville, DeKalb Community Hospital in Smithville, and Stones River Hospital in Woodbury. Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport (LSUHSC-Shreveport) is the academic center for medicine and medical research in North Louisiana. It is located in Shreveport and is part of the Louisiana State University System. The medical school opened in 1969. One of its founders was Dr. Joe E. Holoubek (1915–2007) of Shreveport, a clinical professor of medicine and author originally from Nebraska. Another was Edgar Hull, co-founder in 1931 of the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans, who more than a half-century later disputed the T.
