About the Person

Gloria Joyce Rowland is Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources and Administrative Officer for Sempra Energy, a San Diego-based Fortune 500 energy services holding company whose subsidiaries provide electricity, natural gas and value-added products and services. The Sempra Energy companies` 17,000 employees serve more than 32 million consumers worldwide.   In her current role, Rowland oversees succession planning, leadership development, employee relations, staffing and affirmative-action/diversity programs and employee giving programs. She also is responsible for Sempra Energy`s 2015 move to a new corporate headquarters building in downtown San Diego and serves as president of the Sempra Energy Foundation, the 501(c)(3) private foundation of Sempra Energy.   Previously, Rowland served as senior vice president of human resources, diversity and inclusion for Sempra Energy.   Prior to that, from 1995 to 1998, she was vice president of human resources and chief ethics officer of Pacific Enterprises, the former parent company of SoCalGas.   From 1990 to 1995, Rowland served as manager of labor relations at SoCalGas. In 1987, she served as manager of community involvement and, later, manager of consumer affairs.   She joined SoCalGas in 1980 as an organization and compensation specialist. She held a range of jobs in human resources between 1980 and 1987.   Rowland is president of the Equality California Institute and vice chair of the San Diego LGBT Community Center. She is a member of a number of professional groups, including the Society for Human Resource Management, World at Work and Anthem Blue Cross of California`s consumer relations committee and is also an alumna of the “2001 American Issues Forum of LEADERSHIP AMERICA.”   She has a master`s degree in business administration with a concentration in industrial relations and a bachelor`s degree in psychology (graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of California, Los Angeles. She also completed the executive education program at the University of Michigan and has a number of certifications, including: Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
