The New York State Thruway is an independent public corporation created in 1950 by the New York State Legislature. The first section of the highway opened in 1954, a 115-mile section near Rochester. In 1964, the highway system was re-named “The Governor Thomas E. Dewey Thruway” to recognize vision and leadership of the former governor (1943-1954) in the creation of the cross-state superhighway.
