Established in 1982, the roots of our health care organization date back more than 100 years to 1912 when a handful of Midwestern religious women, who became the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, traveled across the country to open a school and eventually a small hospital in the lumber town of Eureka, California. Today, SJH continues its work in the tradition of the Sisters through our acute care hospitals, home health care, rehabilitation programs, primary care clinics and many community outreach and wellness programs. In each community it touches, SJH reaches out to care for the poor and vulnerable. Based in Irvine, Calif., SJH serves 10 distinct communities within these three general regions and strives to provide perfect care while building the healthiest communities and ensuring every encounter is sacred. The Karmanos Cancer Institute is a unique, integrated center of research, patient care and education, dedicated to the prevention, early detection, treatment and eventual eradication of cancer. Karmanos is based in southeast Michigan, in midtown Detroit, and is one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. In fact, Karmanos is the only hospital in Michigan dedicated exclusively to fighting cancer. Caring for more than 12,000 new patients annually and conducting more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials, the Karmanos Cancer Center is among the nation’s best cancer centers. Karmanos offers access to more than 100 cancer treatments that no other local hospital has. Through the commitment of 1,000 staff, including nearly 300 faculty members, and supported by thousands of volunteer and financial donors, Karmanos strives to prevent, detect and eradicate cancer.
