The government of Knox County, Tennessee operates under a home rule format. The county administrator, formerly known as the County Executive, is called the County Mayor. There is also an elected County Commission. The county officials​ districts do not correspond with those of the city of Knoxville, which has its own mayor and city council. Residents of the county living within Knoxville city limits vote in both city and county elections, are represented by city and county mayors, and pay city and county taxes. While the administration appears to be duplicated, services tend to be separated. Knox County runs the local school system, health department and library branches. Knoxville maintains police department independent of the County Sheriff. Other Knox County elected offices include the Property Assessor, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Trustee, District Attorney General, Law Director, Public Defender and court clerks.
Department of Public Safety The overall mission of the Department of Public Safety is to improve the quality of life for North Carolinians by reducing crime and enhancing public safety. The secretary serves as the sole representative on the Governor`s Cabinet for the state`s law enforcement, correction and emergency response community. The department focuses citizen and legislative attention on law enforcement and public safety issues, such as the supervision of offenders in prison or on community corrections, drinking and driving, underage access to alcohol and tobacco, the proper use of child safety seats, crime prevention, and preparation for natural disasters. In addition to natural disasters, the department is constantly updating plans and providing training for local officials to respond to emergencies such as terrorism, communicable diseases, nuclear power plant incidents and civil unrest. This agency serves as the coordinating agency for North Carolina`s homeland security preparedness.
BREC is the agency that connects people to parks and nature in East Baton Rouge Parish. It is a political subdivision of the state of Louisiana created in 1946 to develop, maintain and operate public park and recreational facilities. Throughout its 70-year history, BREC has taken seriously its responsibility to improve the health, safety, environment and quality of life for all citizens. BREC was among the first park agencies to earn national accreditation and recently earned reaccreditation for an unprecedented fifth time, meeting all 144 standards. BREC is a two-time National Gold Medal Award winner and 13-time national finalist. BREC has more than 180 parks including a unique mix of facilities, which mirror the history and rich natural resources in the region; including a state-of-the-art observatory, a swamp nature center and conservation areas, a performing arts theatre, an equestrian park, an art gallery, an arboretum, an accredited zoo, seven golf courses and an extreme sports park with a 30,000-foot concrete skate park, rock-climbing wall, BMX track and velodrome. Since 2004, BREC has constructed twelve community parks, five dog parks, a family-sized Aquatics Center, a growing trails system, fishing ponds, larger playgrounds and procured two mobile recreation units to serve play deserts in the area. The combination of new and renovated facilities, innovative programming and careful attention to community needs help BREC fulfill its mission to contribute to a healthier, more vibrant community by providing exceptional parks, open spaces and recreation experiences for all of East Baton Rouge Parish.
