In 1991, California`s environmental authority was unified in a single Cabinet level agency—the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). Our mission is to restore, protect and enhance the environment, to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality. We fulfill our mission by developing, implementing and enforcing the state`s environmental protection laws that regulate clean air, clean water, clean soil, safe pesticides and waste recycling and reduction. Our departments are at the forefront of environmental science, using cutting-edge research to shape the state`s environmental laws. The Department of the Secretary of State touches the lives of virtually every Maine resident. From safeguarding the original Maine State Constitution and preserving millions of precious historic documents, to conducting state elections and testing motor vehicle operators, the broad array of Department functions is unusual and interesting. In Maine, the Secretary of State oversees one cohesive Department made up of three distinct bureaus: the Maine State Archives, the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions (CEC), and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). As a Constitutional Officer, the Secretary is elected biennially through joint ballot of the Maine State Legislature, and is charged with carrying out the Department`s diverse responsibilities and unique mission. Because customer service and government efficiency are top priorities, the Department is recognized as a leader in the effort to enhance access to information and services through the use of technology. With more than 20 online services already in place, the Department of the Secretary of State is demonstrating the exciting possibilities for making e-Government services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Through a partnership with the Information Resource of Maine (InforME), new online services are being launched on a regular basis. Importantly, the Department takes its responsibilities in the area of elections and civic education very seriously. Through comprehensive initiatives, the Secretary of State`s office conducts a variety of projects designed to strengthen our democracy.
Located ten miles south of Danville, Illinois, Georgetown was settled by Quakers from Tennessee during the early nineteenth century. Originally surveyed (with a grapevine for measurement and the North Star for direction) by James Haworth, Georgetown was chartered in 1827 with only two streets. In 1873, Georgetown, named after Haworth`s son was incorporated. From 1890 to 1920, Georgetown grew from 600 residents to 4,000 residents. The coal mining industry provided the impetus for this expansion. Immigrants from Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, Poland, and others in Central and Eastern Europe settled in the Georgetown area. Today, Georgetown continues to be a culturally diverse area having much to offer its citizens. With a current population of more than 3,400 people, Georgetown is looking toward the twenty first century with enthusiasm. Based upon a strong network of organizations, public services, and economic opportunities, Georgetown utilizes its resources to meet the needs of residents. These resources include a full time police department, ambulance service, fire protection, full postal services, banking facilities, and many others. In addition, the city is at the forefront of technology in the county. It is one of the first cities in the county to have a web site, and its school district is one of the most connected school districts in the county as well. Georgetown offers an excellent mix of small town living with large city services and entrepreneurial opportunities -- the best of both worlds.
