Under the umbrella of the California Health and Human Services Agency, the California Department of Aging (CDA) administers programs that serve older adults, adults with disabilities, family caregivers, and residents in long-term care facilities throughout the State. These programs are funded through the federal Older Americans Act, the Older Californians Act, and through the Medi-Cal program. The Department contracts with the network of 33 Area Agencies on Aging, who directly manage a wide array of federal and state-funded services that provide meals, help finding employment; supportive services to assist older individuals as well as younger adults with disabilities to live as independently as possible; promote healthy aging and community involvement; and support family members in their vital care giving role. CDA also contracts with 38 agencies that operate the Multipurpose Senior Services Program through the Medi-Cal home and community-based waiver for the elderly and certifies approximately 242 Adult Day Health Care Centers for participation in the Medi-Cal Community Based Adult Services (CBAS) Program. To promote the Department`s goal of every Californian having the opportunity to enjoy wellness, longevity and quality of life in strong healthy communities, CDA actively collaborates with many other State departments (and other entities) on transportation, housing and accessibility, emergency preparedness and response, wellness and nutrition, falls and injury prevention, improving services to persons with dementia, reducing fraud and abuse and many other issues.
The City of Conway was founded by A. P. Robinson, who came to Conway shortly after the Civil War. Robinson was the chief engineer for the Little Rock-Fort Smith Railroad (now the Union-Pacific). Part of his compensation was the deed to a tract of land, one square mile, located near the old settlement of Cadron. When the railroad came through, Robinson deeded a small tract of his land back to the railroad for a depot site. He laid off a town site around the depot and named it Conway Station, in honor of a famous Arkansas family. Conway Station contained two small stores, two saloons, a depot, some temporary housing and a post office. Conway was designated the county seat of Faulkner County in 1873, the same year that the county was created by the legislature. In October 1875, Conway was incorporated and, at that time, had a population of approximately 200. When originally incorporated in 1875, Conway was just one square mile surrounding Conway Station on the Little Rock and Fort Smith Branch of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad. By 1959, Conway encompassed 6.9 square miles. During the next 30 years Conway grew rapidly annexing a total of 15.4 square miles. During the 1990's grew even faster, adding 12.2 square miles. Conway now encompasses approximately 45.63 square miles. Almost all area annexed has been through petition by the property owners. For many years Conway flourished as a trade center for a large rural agricultural area. Hendrix College was established in Conway in 1890. Three years later, in 1893, Central College for Girls was established, and Conway was on its way to becoming an educational center. The University of Central Arkansas was founded in Conway in 1907 as the Arkansas Normal School. Its economy was firmly established upon agriculture and the educational institutions until World War II. After the war, diversification of the economy was started by Conway businessmen, and several small industries were attracted to Conway. Subsequently, additional state institutions were located in Conway, including the headquarters for the Office of Emergency Services, the Human Development Center, and the Arkansas Educational Television Network. Conway has a sizable industrial / technological base. Industry located in Conway includes Kimberly Clark, Hewlett Packard, Virco, Acxiom, and Snap-on. Computer database giant Acxiom calls Conway their headquarters.
Founded in 1989, the Cranberry Township Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to identifying, preserving, and promoting public awareness of historical sites, landmarks, place names, and traditions.
Water Maintenance is responsible for operating, maintaining and repairing the water distribution system; installing new water mains, implementing the backflow prevention program; reviewing plans for new water mains and services; approving new water service applications; and maintaining records of the distribution system. The distribution system is the network of pipes and the associated fittings, valves, hydrants and appurtenances that transports water throughout the City. Most of the distribution system is located within the city street right-of-ways. A small percentage is located in cross-country easements. Water is pumped into the distribution system from the water treatment plant on Kenoza Lake. The distribution system includes approximately 235 miles of pipe that range in size from 2-inch up to 36-inch. Pipe materials include unlined cast iron, lined cast iron, ductile iron, transite, and PVC. Pressures and storage throughout the system are maintained by three concrete storage tanks and 5 booster pumping stations throughout the City. The pumping stations operate to fill storage tanks and/or pressurize separate high pressure zones.
