New York, NY-based Teach for America has promoted Brittany Packnett to Executive Director.

 

About the Company

Teach for America works in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty. Founded in 1990, Teach for America enlists, develops, and mobilizes remarkable and diverse individuals who make an initial two-year commitment to teach in high-need schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to end educational inequity. Today, 8,600 corps members are teaching in 52 urban and rural regions across the country while more than 42,000 alumni take collective action by working across sectors to ensure that all children have access to an excellent education. Teach for America is a proud member of the AmeriCorps national service network.

 

About the Person

A St. Louis native, Brittany was raised in a tradition of social justice. Under her leadership, the 20,000 student region set records in fundraising & culturally responsive leadership. Previously, she was an elementary teacher and education policy advocate in Washington, DC. Personally, she’s an activist for issues of racial and social equity. In 2014, Brittany was appointed to the Ferguson Commission and President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. She’s been named one of TIME Magazine’s 12 New Faces of Black Leadership and, with DeRay McKesson, awarded the Peter Jennings Award for Civic Leadership.
